West Chicago is located in DuPage County, Illinois approximately thirty-five miles west of the city of Chicago. First settled in the late 1830s, the area took on significant growth with the arrival of the Galena & Chicago Union and St. Charles Branch railroads in 1849, followed in 1850 by the addition of the Aurora Branch line. The community was incorporated in 1873 as the Village of Turner, later changing its name to the Village of West Chicago in 1896. The city has flourished since then, and its population has swelled from 2,378 in 1910 to its present number of more than 24,000 residents.
West Chicago falls in the humid continental climate zone of the U.S., bringing seasonal changes to the weather that amount to hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. No matter what the season in West Chicago, the city is a beautiful place to live or visit any time of the year!
The city of West Chicago is home to a number of historical and cultural attractions. The West Chicago City Museum is located in the former Turner Town Hall, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is home to numerous exhibits relative to the early history of West Chicago. The West Chicago Historical Society operates the Kruse House Museum, former home of the Fred Kruse family that houses exhibits containing household and railroad memorabilia from the early 1900s. Gallery 200 is located in West Chicago's historic downtown district and features an art gallery that highlights the works of local artists, as well as the Gallery Theater that is home to a non-profit theater company dedicated to the development of artistic theater programs in the community.
West Chicago is also home to numerous parks and recreational facilities, including Reed-Keppler Park, which features picnic pavilions, baseball fields, a skate park, and Turtle Splash aquatic park. Reed-Keepler is also home to the Wiggly Field Dog Park, a private, permit only Dog Park that requires registration for use. Golf courses in the city include the Prairie Landing Golf Club and St. Andrews Golf & Country Club. Fitness buffs will enjoy the amenities of the Fitness Station, as well as the hiking and biking trails provided by the Illinois Prairie Path and Great Western Trail.
