The city of Wilmington is located in Will County, Illinois approximately fifty miles from the Chicago metropolitan area.  Wilmington was home to members of the Potawatomi Indian Tribe up until about the year 1834 when the area was settled by its first permanent settler, Thomas Cox, who acquired approximately 400 acres from the government and built the community's first sawmill.  Wilmington was incorporated in 1854, the same year the Chicago and Alton Railroad arrived to the area.  Today, the city boasts a population of about 5,000 residents spread over a 4.5 square mile area situated on the banks of the Kankakee River.  Wilmington is in the U. S. humid continental climate zone, which brings hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters with lovely mild weather during springtime and fall, making it a beautiful place to live or visit at any season of the year!

Wilmington is located in the beautiful Kankakee River Valley and features numerous opportunities for outdoor recreational pursuits that include boating, fishing, hunting, and all water sports.  The Wilmington Island Park District operates three municipal parks, including the North and South Islands, Children's Memorial Park, and Brookside Park.  The city hosts numerous community events during the year, including its famous Catfish Days that features a carnival, parade, flea market, fun activities for all ages, and mouth-watering catfish dinners.  The Kankakee River State Park is located ten miles south of the city and offers fishing, boating, canoeing and kayaking, camping, hunting, and hiking and biking, just to name a few of the recreational activities available there.

The city of Wilmington is proud of their Wilmington High School football team that has been a Class 3A State Runner-Up, placed first in the Interstate Eight Conference, achieved the #1 state ranking, and has made the playoffs for eight straight years.  Congratulations, Wilmington High School Football Wildcats!
